about
BIO: Shelby Smoak, a severe hemophiliac, finds solace in art. Having been a musician since high school, he’s shared his music by touring up and down the east coast and has a host of recordings released in various musical projects. Most recently, when life became complicated because of his hemophilia and his need to undergo Hepatitis C therapy, he formed Simple. During recovery after a total hip replacement surgery, Smoak wrote the songs that appear on the band’s first release, aptly titled "Songs From a Broken Hip." Smoak finds catharsis in music, and the songs on the album were outlets to express the struggle of his recovery. The band went on to release a live EP and a self-titled album before Smoak moved away and the band dissolved. Smoak is now working with a fellow bandmate on a project, Dos Ninjas. In addition, Smoak writes and his recently published book, "Bleeder: A Memoir" (MSU Press), recounts his college-age experience as an HIV-positive hemophiliac. Bleeder won an independent publishers’ gold medal for memoir (IPPY) and has been nominated for Book of the Year by "Foreword Reviews" and the American Library Association. In all things, Smoak finds art a place to sing and write about bleeding. He hopes his fellow bleeders may find channels that offer a similar comfort and reprieve from the ache and hurt of hemophilia.
